In the summer of 2019, a tragic act of domestic violence claimed the life of 42-year-old Tia Bivins, a female resident of Denver, Colorado. On July 18th, inside her home on the 3200 block of North Dexter Street, Tia was fatally shot. The perpetrator was her own husband, Phillip Bivins, who was 45 years old at the time of the incident.
The day after the shooting, in a surprising turn of events, Phillip Bivins walked into a Denver police station.
He approached the officers on duty and confessed to his involvement in the shooting, leading to his immediate arrest. When police officers arrived at the Bivins' residence, they discovered Tia unresponsive. Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that her death was the result of a gunshot wound.
The legal process that followed saw Phillip Bivins charged with the murder of his wife. In March 2022, a Denver jury, after five and a half hours of deliberation, found him guilty of second-degree murder. The case, which highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence, concluded on June 17, 2022, when a judge sentenced Phillip Bivins to 48 years in prison for the murder of his wife, Tia. The sentence brought a close to a case that had been a painful reminder of the dangers that can exist within a home.
