In the early hours of August 5, 2020, a devastating fire engulfed a home in Denver, Colorado, tragically cutting short the life of 23-year-old Adja Diol, a female of Senegalese descent. The blaze, which was deliberately set, also claimed the lives of her 29-year-old husband, Djibril Diol, their 22-month-old daughter, Khadija Diol, as well as Djibril's 25-year-old sister, Hassan Diol, and her infant daughter, Hawa Beye.
Three other occupants of the house managed to escape the inferno by jumping from a second-story window.
The investigation into the fatal fire led authorities to three teenagers: Kevin Bui, who was 16 at the time, Gavin Seymour, also 16, and Dillon Siebert, who was 14. The motive behind the horrific act was a tragic case of mistaken identity and misplaced revenge. Bui had been robbed of his phone and money weeks prior to the incident. Using a phone-tracking application, he mistakenly traced his stolen device to the Diol family's address. Believing the residents were responsible for the robbery, Bui, along with Seymour and Siebert, went to the house in the middle of the night, doused the living room with gasoline, and set it on fire.
The investigation was complex, and for months, there were no leads. Surveillance footage captured three masked individuals fleeing the scene in a dark-colored sedan. A significant break in the case came when investigators utilized a Google search warrant to identify users who had searched for the victims' address. This digital trail ultimately led to the identification and arrest of the three teenagers in January 2021. They were charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and arson.
All three suspects were prosecuted, with Bui and Seymour being tried as adults. Kevin Bui, considered the ringleader, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Gavin Seymour pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and received a 40-year prison sentence. Dillon Siebert, tried as a juvenile, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to three years in a juvenile detention facility followed by seven years in a youthful offender program.
