Virginia Beach Mass Murderer: DeWayne A. Craddock (2019)
Overview
On May 31, 2019, DeWayne Antonio Craddock, a 40-year-old engineer with the City of Virginia Beach, carried out a workplace mass shooting at Building 2 of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center in the Princess Anne area. He murdered 12 people and wounded others before being fatally shot by police during a prolonged gunfight inside the building. Eleven of the victims were city employees; one was a contractor who had come to obtain a permit. The attack is among the deadliest workplace shootings in U.S. history.
Timeline of the Attack
Craddock arrived for work that morning and, at 10:30 a.m., emailed a two-weeks’ resignation citing “personal reasons.” Shortly before 4:03 p.m., he retrieved a .45-caliber handgun with a suppressor from his car and began the assault in the south parking lot, then moved into Building 2, attacking victims on multiple floors. The first 9-1-1 call was received at 4:06:32 p.m.; officers entered the building by 4:10 p.m., first engaged him around 4:18 p.m., and took him into custody at 4:44 p.m. He was pronounced dead at 5:26 p.m.
Weapons and Method
Investigators recovered two .45-caliber semiautomatic pistols associated with the attack: an H&K USP Compact Tactical fitted with a suppressor and a Glock 21 (one pistol was unused). He had purchased the firearms legally in the years prior to the shooting; multiple extended magazines were also found.
