The 2026 East St. Louis Family Mass Killing: Wynitta Thompson and Ja'ymier Davis

Overview of the Case

Wynitta Thompson, 15, and her 16-year-old boyfriend, Ja'ymier Davis, were accused of carrying out a series of targeted shootings that killed five members of Thompson's family and seriously wounded two others in East St. Louis, Illinois. The victims were discovered at three locations on July 12, 2026, although investigators believed at least one of the killings may have occurred several days earlier. The violence devastated several generations of one family. Those killed ranged in age from 21 to 74 and included Thompson's siblings or stepsiblings, aunt, cousin and grandmother. Authorities described the incident as a targeted attack rather than a random shooting, and police said there was no continuing danger to the general public after the teenagers were taken into custody. Davis was charged as an adult with five counts of first-degree murder and seven additional felony counts. Thompson initially faced proceedings in juvenile court because of her age, while prosecutors sought permission to transfer her case to adult criminal court. All allegations remained subject to proof in court, and both defendants were legally presumed innocent unless convicted.

Discovery of the Victims

The investigation began on Sunday, July 12, 2026, when human remains were discovered at the Samuel Gompers Homes public housing complex in East St. Louis. Police officers and Illinois State Police agents responded and began searching additional locations connected to the family. The first discovery led investigators to four more deceased victims and two relatives who had survived gunshot wounds. The crime scenes were spread across different parts of East St. Louis, indicating that the violence had unfolded as a series of attacks rather than a single shooting at one residence. One victim was reportedly found inside a vehicle behind a vacant house. Another was located in Jones Park. Other victims were discovered at or near the housing complex. Police did not immediately release a complete public timeline showing the precise order in which each person was attacked.

Victims

  • Patricia A. May, 74: Thompson's grandmother. She was killed in East St. Louis and was reportedly found at the Samuel Gompers Homes complex. Charging documents alleged that her thumb was removed after her death, resulting in a separate charge of dismembering a human body against Davis.
  • Cherie L. May, 49: Thompson's aunt. Relatives said she had apparently been shot several days before the other victims were discovered. Her body was located during the July 12 investigation in East St. Louis.
  • Shania W. Thompson, 25: A member of Thompson's immediate family, described by relatives as one of her siblings or stepsiblings. She was reportedly found dead inside a vehicle behind a vacant property in East St. Louis.
  • Devin May, 24: Thompson's cousin and Cherie May's son. He was killed during the series of attacks in East St. Louis. Family members said he was the father of a young daughter.
  • Quentin L. Thompson, 21: A member of Thompson's immediate family, described as one of her siblings or stepsiblings. He was reportedly found in Jones Park in East St. Louis.
  • Tiffany Thompson: Thompson's mother and one of the two surviving victims. Prosecutors accused the teenagers of attempting to murder her. Relatives said she was shot several times and hospitalized with serious injuries.
  • Santosha Scott: Thompson's cousin and the second surviving victim. She was also shot and seriously wounded during the alleged attack.
