Esteban Santiago and the 2017 Fort Lauderdale Airport Mass Shooting

Overview

On January 6, 2017, 26-year-old Esteban Santiago opened fire in the baggage-claim area of Terminal 2 at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida. He killed five travelers and wounded six others by gunfire; dozens more were injured in the ensuing panic. The attack lasted roughly 70–80 seconds before Santiago surrendered and was taken into custody by a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Timeline of the Attack

That day, Santiago flew on a Delta itinerary from Anchorage, Alaska (via Minneapolis–Saint Paul) with a legally checked Walther PPS 9mm pistol and two magazines in a locked case. After landing in Fort Lauderdale around midday, he retrieved the case, went to a nearby restroom to load the firearm, then returned to the carousel area and began shooting at 12:53–12:55 p.m. EST. He fired approximately 15 rounds, striking unsuspecting passengers who were collecting luggage for upcoming cruises. When his magazine was empty, he lay down on the floor and surrendered within about 85 seconds of the first shots.
