Overview

On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old resident of Newtown, Connecticut, committed one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history. Before targeting Sandy Hook Elementary School, he first murdered his mother, Nancy Lanza, in their home. Armed with a Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle and other weapons, he entered the school in the morning hours and carried out a brutal attack. Within minutes, he killed 26 people, including 20 children and 6 adult staff members, before taking his own life as police arrived on the scene.

The Crime

At approximately 9:30 a.m., Adam Lanza shot through the locked glass doors of Sandy Hook Elementary School to gain entry. Once inside, he moved through classrooms and hallways, firing at teachers, staff, and students. The victims included children as young as six years old and the educators who tried desperately to protect them. The attack lasted less than 11 minutes but left an enduring impact on the nation. Police later found that Lanza had extensive writings and material documenting mass killings, suggesting he had premeditated the assault.

Victims

The massacre claimed the lives of 27 people, including Lanza's mother at her residence and 26 victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The victims at the school were predominantly first-grade children and the faculty who attempted to shield them.
