On a day that began like any other, Madeleine Feng Hsu, a bright-eyed and compassionate six-year-old girl, went to her first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Known to her loved ones as Maddie, she was a happy child, a leader among her peers, and a girl who loved to run. Her life, full of promise and blossoming friendships, was tragically cut short on December 14, 2012.
That morning, a troubled 20-year-old named Adam Lanza forced his way into the
school and began a senseless attack. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle, he moved through the halls and classrooms, firing indiscriminately. Madeleine was one of twenty children, all between the ages of six and seven, who did not survive the horrific events of that day. Six educators also lost their lives protecting the students.
The investigation that followed plunged the community and the nation into a state of grief and disbelief. It was determined that Lanza had first killed his mother at their home before driving to the school to carry out the massacre. After his rampage, as law enforcement closed in, Lanza took his own life.
Authorities conducted a thorough and exhaustive investigation into the shooting. The final report concluded that Adam Lanza acted alone. He was the sole perpetrator of the heinous acts committed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As a result, with the suspect deceased, the investigation was officially closed, and no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Madeleine Feng Hsu and the other innocent victims.
