Daniel Gerard Barden, a seven-year-old White Caucasian male, was a student at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Described by his family as a "light," Daniel was known for his constant smile, politeness, and affectionate nature. He was an imaginative and articulate boy who brought laughter and joy to those around him. Daniel was fearless in his approach to life, enjoying simple pleasures like riding waves at the beach, playing drums in a band with his older brother and
sister, and making s'mores by a campfire with his cousins.
On the morning of December 14, 2012, a tragic event unfolded that would cut his young life short. A 20-year-old man named Adam Lanza forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and began shooting. Before arriving at the school, Lanza had fatally shot his mother at their home. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle and two pistols, he moved through the school, targeting students and staff members.
Daniel was in his first-grade classroom when the gunman entered. He, along with nineteen other children and six adult staff members at the school, was killed during the rampage. The attack was swift and brutal, leaving a devastating toll. As first responders and police arrived at the school, the shooter took his own life.
The investigation that followed confirmed that Adam Lanza was the sole perpetrator of the massacre. He had acted alone in planning and carrying out the attack. Since the only suspect died by suicide at the scene of the crime, no arrests were made in connection with the shooting. The exhaustive investigation was officially closed with the conclusion that Lanza was solely responsible for the deaths of the 27 victims, including Daniel Barden.
