Ana Grace Márquez-Greene, a 6-year-old Hispanic girl, had a life filled with music and dance that was tragically cut short on December 14, 2012. On that day, a gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and opened fire. Ana was in her first-grade classroom when Lanza entered and began shooting, killing her, 19 of her fellow students, and six adult staff members in one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.
The young girl, who was known for her love of singing and dancing, had moved to Newtown with her family just months before the tragedy.
The horrific events of that day began earlier when Lanza fatally shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home. He then drove her car to the elementary school, armed with multiple firearms that were legally owned by his mother. After shooting his way through a glass window to enter the locked school, he carried out his attack in two first-grade classrooms. The assault ended when Lanza took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound as law enforcement officers began to arrive at the scene.
In the aftermath, investigations revealed the shooter had significant mental health issues, but no clear motive for his actions was ever determined. Because Adam Lanza was the sole perpetrator and died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the massacre. The community and the nation were left to mourn the senseless loss of innocent lives, including that of a vibrant young girl who found joy in a song and expressed herself through dance.
