William Hudson: The 2015 Anderson County, Texas Campsite Murders

Overview

In mid-November 2015, six members of two interconnected families were murdered at a rural campsite near Tennessee Colony in Anderson County, Texas. The perpetrator, 33-year-old William Mitchell Hudson, had encountered the group the day before, offered help when a vehicle became stuck in mud, and later turned on them. The killings—two at a travel trailer and four whose bodies were later recovered from a nearby pond—became the largest homicide case in the county’s history.

What Happened

According to investigators, Hudson first met the extended family on November 14, 2015, when he helped free one of their vehicles from the mud near private property off a rural county road. Later that night and into the early hours of November 15, two victims were shot at or near a travel trailer on the campsite. The remaining four were lured into nearby woods and ultimately found submerged in a pond roughly half a mile from the campsite. One adult survivor, Cynthia Johnson (Carl Johnson’s wife), hid in the woods and alerted authorities the next morning, helping identify Hudson as the assailant. Law enforcement arrested Hudson later that day and initially charged him with murder. Within the week, the Anderson County District Attorney secured six capital murder charges against Hudson, and his bond was set at $2.5 million. Preliminary autopsy findings confirmed all six deaths were homicides. ...Read More
