William Lockey’s 2002 Bertrand Products Mass Shooting

Overview

On March 22, 2002, 54-year-old William Lockey opened fire on co-workers inside Bertrand Products, Inc., an aircraft-parts manufacturer in South Bend, Indiana. He used a rifle and a shotgun, killing four people and wounding others. Lockey fled the scene in a stolen company van and exchanged gunfire with police as he drove toward the Michigan state line. The pursuit ended near Niles, Michigan, where Lockey died by suicide in the moving van as it approached a police roadblock. Four victims were killed; five people were wounded in total, including three police officers injured by pellets and flying debris.

Timeline of Events

• ~7:00 a.m. — Lockey begins his shift in the shipping and receiving department at Bertrand Products. Co-workers later recall he arrived carrying a grocery bag.
• 8:15 a.m. — He starts shooting co-workers inside the facility with a rifle and a shotgun.
• Shortly after — Lockey flees in a stolen company van. During a high-speed pursuit, he periodically stops to fire at officers, then drives off again.
• Approaching a roadblock near Niles, Michigan — He shoots himself while the van is still moving; it rolls on, strikes mailboxes, and stops against a tree.
