Overview
On January 23, 2023, 66-year-old farmworker Chunli Zhao carried out a pair of connected shootings at two agricultural worksites in and around Half Moon Bay, California, killing seven coworkers and wounding an eighth. Authorities described the attacks as an instance of workplace violence. Zhao was arrested the same afternoon after driving to a San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office substation, where deputies took him into custody without incident; a Glock 17-style handgun was recovered from his vehicle.Timeline of the Crimes (January 23, 2023)
2:22 p.m. Deputies were dispatched to the Mountain Mushroom Farm (also known as California Terra Garden) on the 12700 block of San Mateo Road (Highway 92). Four victims were found dead at this first scene; a fifth victim was critically injured and airlifted to Stanford Medical Center. Within minutes, Zhao drove about three miles to a second site, Concord Farms, at the 2100 block of Cabrillo Highway South (Highway 1), where three additional victims were fatally shot. 4:40 p.m. Zhao was located in his SUV and arrested in the parking lot of the Sheriff’s Half Moon Bay substation (500 block of Kelly Avenue).Locations
