Jarrod Ramos and the 2018 Capital Gazette Mass Murder
Background
Jarrod Warren Ramos (born December 21, 1979) had a longstanding grudge against the Capital Gazette newspaper in Maryland after it reported in 2011 on his harassment conviction. He filed a defamation lawsuit in 2012 that was dismissed by the courts, and he continued to fixate on the paper and its staff for years leading up to the attack.
The Attack — June 28, 2018
On the afternoon of June 28, 2018, Ramos arrived at the Capital Gazette’s newsroom at 888 Bestgate Road, just outside Annapolis, Maryland. Around 2:30 p.m., he blasted through the glass entry with a 12-gauge shotgun and began firing at employees. Investigators and prosecutors later noted that he had barricaded a rear exit, brought smoke devices, and moved deliberately through the office.
The attack lasted minutes but was devastating: five employees were murdered and others were injured before police took Ramos into custody inside the building.
Arrest and Charges
Ramos was arrested at the scene without gunfire exchanged. A grand jury later indicted him on 23 counts, including five counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, multiple counts of first-degree assault, and firearms offenses. He was held without bond.
