Overview
On July 2 2004, Elijah Brown, 21, a disgruntled employee at the ConAgra Foods meatpacking plant in Kansas City, Kansas, carried out a deadly rampage. Armed with two handguns he had smuggled into the workplace, he shot seven co-workers, killing five and seriously wounding two. The attack ended with Brown taking his own life.
Sequence of Events
Shortly after 5 p.m., during a break period following an employee meeting, Brown retrieved two handguns from his locker and entered the break room. He deliberately targeted certain co-workers—some of whom he believed had teased or tormented him. Witnesses quote him saying, “This is what you get for messing with me” and granting reprieves like “You’re good to go” to others.

- Lonnie Ellingburg, 46, Kansas City, Kan. – fatally shot.
- Travis Nelson, 23, Kansas City, Kan. – fatally shot.
- Ardell L. Edwards, 55, Grandview, Mo. – fatally wounded in the plant; died the next day in hospital.
- Leonardo Rodriguez, 49, Kansas City, Kan. – fatally shot.
- A 45-year-old Mexican national (name not released pending family notification) – fatally shot.
- Juan Ramirez, 44, Kansas City, Kan. – wounded, survived.
- Victor Coggs (Grandview, Mo.; age unspecified) – wounded in the arm, survived.
