On a tragic Friday afternoon, July 2, 2004, the life of 23-year-old Travis Lamont Nelson of Kansas City, Kansas, was cut short in a horrifying act of workplace violence. The ConAgra Foods meat-processing plant on Speaker Road, a place of employment for many, became a scene of chaos and bloodshed when a coworker, Elijah Brown, opened fire.
The attack unfolded in the facility's break room, where Brown, armed with two handguns, began his deadly rampage.
Eyewitnesses reported that Travis Nelson was the first person targeted by the gunman. A chilling account from a coworker described seeing Nelson fall to the ground after the first shot, a pool of blood quickly forming around him. The shooter appeared to select his victims with a chilling deliberation, with one witness recalling Brown stating, "This is what you get for messing with me," to one of the victims.
The violence that day claimed the lives of five people, including Nelson. Among the deceased were Lonnie E. Ellingburg, who was Nelson's uncle, and Ardell Edwards, another relative, devastating a single extended family. Two other employees were wounded but survived the attack. After carrying out the shootings, Elijah Brown turned a weapon on himself, taking his own life at the scene.
In the aftermath, investigators worked to piece together a motive for the horrific events. It was reported that Brown had been rehired about six weeks prior to the shooting after a layoff and may have held grievances over changes to his job assignments. Authorities concluded that Brown acted alone, and with the sole suspect deceased, no arrests were made in connection with the mass shooting. Funeral services for Travis Nelson were held on July 10, 2004, at the Miracle Rejoicing Worship Center, and he was laid to rest at Highland Park Cemetery.
