On a late summer evening in Kansas City, Kansas, the life of Steven L. Sykes, a 36-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On September 3, 2016, officers were called to a disturbance in the 3100 block of North 21st Street. There, they discovered Sykes suffering from gunshot wounds. He was a resident of Kansas City, Kansas.
The investigation into the shooting was handled by the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department's Major Case Unit.
Just days later, their work led to a significant development in the case. A suspect was identified and taken into custody, bringing a swift, albeit partial, sense of resolution to the violent act. The community was left to mourn the loss of a man who was a father, a son, and a friend.
The Wyandotte County prosecutor's office formally charged 30-year-old Daryl Bagby with first-degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm in connection with Steven Sykes's death. Following the charges, Bagby was held in the Wyandotte County jail on a $750,000 bond.
