In the winter of 2014, the life of a sixteen-year-old Black male named Kahlif L'Ron Hampton was tragically cut short in his own home in Kansas City, Kansas. On the evening of December 14th, what should have been a safe space from the world became the scene of a devastating act of violence that left a family and community in mourning.
Earlier that day, a dispute had reportedly taken place involving Kahlif and other young people who lived near his family's townhome on North 70th Terrace and attended the same high school. Following this initial physical altercation in front of the Hampton residence, the conflict escalated with deadly consequences. A short time later, one or more individuals returned to the home and fired several shots through the exterior walls.
Inside the townhome, unaware of the imminent danger, Kahlif was struck in the head by one of the bullets that penetrated the building. He was in his own house, a place where he should have been protected, when his life was taken. The shooting prompted fear and concern in the community, leading officials at Turner High School, where Kahlif was a student, to place the school on lockdown the following week amid rumors of potential retaliation.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. However, despite the known circumstances of an ongoing dispute preceding the homicide, no arrests were made in the case. As of October 2015, no one had been charged with the fatal shooting of Kahlif Hampton, and the case remained unsolved, leaving his family without answers and a community still searching for justice.
