Carol Tormey, an 81-year-old woman from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was reported missing on July 21, 2024. She had Alzheimer's disease and was last seen leaving her home in the 1500 block of South Ocean Lane. Tormey's family became concerned when she did not return home and contacted the police, who issued a Silver Alert. The alert included information about her 2018 black Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.
In the days following her disappearance, Tormey's family and friends distributed flyers and asked the public for help in locating her. They also hired a company, Sunshine State Sonar, to assist in the search by checking bodies of water in the area. Despite extensive search efforts, including tracking her vehicle with AirTags, Tormey remained missing.
Almost two weeks after she was reported missing, Tormey's body was discovered in a canal in Miramar, Florida. Her truck was also found submerged in the water. The discovery was made by fishermen who reported it to the police. Tormey's family confirmed the identity of the body, although the medical examiner's results were pending due to the body being underwater for a significant period.
The family expressed their grief and gratitude for the support they received during the search. They believe Tormey drove her truck from their Fort Lauderdale home, traveled around eastern Broward County, and eventually ended up in the canal in Miramar. The case has brought attention to the challenges faced by families of individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia.
