On January 23, 2023, a tragic mass shooting unfolded in Half Moon Bay, California, resulting in the deaths of seven farmworkers, including 38-year-old José Romero Pérez. The incident occurred at two mushroom farms: California Terra Garden and Concord Farms. The assailant, 66-year-old Chunli Zhao, was an employee at California Terra Garden and had previously worked at Concord Farms.
He was apprehended shortly after the shootings and has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
José had emigrated from Oaxaca, Mexico, to Half Moon Bay less than two years prior, aiming to provide a better life for his wife and children. His younger brother, Pedro Félix Romero Pérez, aged 23, was also present during the attack and sustained critical injuries after being shot five times. Pedro survived the ordeal and has since filed a lawsuit against the farm owners, alleging failure to protect their workers from such acts of violence.
The motive behind Zhao's actions is believed to be related to workplace grievances. Reports suggest that Zhao felt disrespected by his co-workers, which may have led to the violent outburst. This tragic event has highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by migrant farmworkers, many of whom live in substandard conditions and may fear reporting issues due to their immigration status.
In the aftermath of the shooting, there has been increased scrutiny on the living and working conditions of farmworkers in the area. Advocacy groups have called for better protections and support for these essential workers, emphasizing the need for safe and sanitary housing, as well as mechanisms to address workplace disputes without fear of retaliation.
As of December 2024, the trial for Chunli Zhao has been delayed, with proceedings now scheduled to commence on April 29, 2025. The delay was granted to allow the defense additional time for investigation. The families of the victims, including José's, continue to seek justice and advocate for systemic changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
