Hugo Villanueva-Morales and the 2019 Tequila KC Mass Shooting
Overview
In the early morning of October 6, 2019, gunfire erupted inside the Tequila KC bar at 1013 Central Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas. Two gunmen—Hugo Alberto Villanueva-Morales and Javier Alatorre—opened fire, killing four men and wounding five others in what police described as a targeted attack rather than a random shooting.
Lead-up to the Attack
According to investigators, the two men were kicked out of the bar after an altercation earlier in the night. They later returned armed with handguns and, according to police, appeared to fire at specific individuals.
The Shooting
The attack began at approximately 1:30 a.m. while about 40 patrons were inside Tequila KC. Nine people were shot in total—four fatally and five wounded—before the shooters fled. Police emphasized at the time that the incident did not appear to be random.
