In the early morning hours of October 6, 2019, the lively atmosphere inside Tequila KC bar in Kansas City, Kansas, turned into a scene of terror and tragedy. Francisco Garcia Anaya, a 34-year-old Hispanic male, was among the patrons when gunfire erupted, claiming his life and the lives of three other men. The shocking act of violence that shattered the community stemmed from a seemingly minor dispute earlier that evening.
The night had begun like many others at the neighborhood bar, with
around 40 people gathered inside. A disagreement arose involving two men, identified as 23-year-old Javier Alatorre and 29-year-old Hugo Villanueva-Morales. After being refused service due to previous disturbances, one of the men reportedly threw a cup at the bartender. The escalating tension resulted in the two men being ejected from the establishment. However, their departure was not the end of the conflict.
A short time later, Alatorre and Villanueva-Morales returned to Tequila KC, this time armed with handguns. They entered the bar and opened fire into the crowd, creating a chaotic scene as patrons scrambled for safety. When the shooting stopped, Francisco Garcia Anaya, along with Everardo Meza, 29, Alfredo Calderon Jr., 29, and Martin Rodriguez-Gonzalez, 58, lay dead. Five other people were wounded in the attack. The suspects fled the scene, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless loss of life.
The investigation into the mass shooting moved swiftly. The day after the incident, authorities located and arrested Javier Alatorre in Kansas City, Missouri. His accomplice, Hugo Villanueva-Morales, managed to evade capture and fled to Mexico. For two months, he remained a fugitive. In December 2019, through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, Villanueva-Morales was apprehended in Michoacán, Mexico. Both men were charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
Javier Alatorre eventually pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 34 years in prison. Hugo Villanueva-Morales faced a trial where he was convicted of capital murder. He received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
