Overview

On the evening of July 3, 2023, a gunman later identified by authorities as 40-year-old Kimbrady Carriker carried out a mass shooting in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Southwest Philadelphia. Five people were killed and two children were wounded. The attack largely unfolded around 56th Street and Chester Avenue before police apprehended the suspect nearby.

Weapons and Appearance

According to officials, the shooter wore a bullet-resistant vest and carried an AR-15–style rifle and a 9mm handgun with multiple magazines; a police scanner was also recovered.

July 2, 2023 (early morning): Investigators later determined that the first victim, Joseph Wamah Jr., had been killed inside his residence roughly 44 hours before the main shooting spree. A 911 call was misdirected to the wrong part of the city, delaying discovery. July 3, 2023 (evening): Around 8:20–8:30 p.m., Carriker opened fire on streets in Kingsessing, striking pedestrians and vehicles.
