On July 3, 2023, 29-year-old Dymir Stanton was tragically killed in a mass shooting in Philadelphia's Kingsessing neighborhood. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m., resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including Stanton, and injuries to several others. The shooter, identified as 40-year-old Kimbrady Carriker, was apprehended by police shortly after the rampage.
Carriker was found wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun.
Authorities reported that he fired indiscriminately at people on the streets and in vehicles, with no apparent connection to the victims. In addition to Stanton, the other deceased victims were identified as 15-year-old Daujan Brown, 20-year-old Lashyd Merritt, 31-year-old Joseph Wamah Jr., and 59-year-old Ralph Moralis.
Following his arrest, Carriker was charged with multiple offenses, including five counts of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons charges. During a search of his residence, investigators recovered another handgun and matching ammunition, as well as a handwritten will dated June 23. Witnesses described Carriker exhibiting abnormal behavior in the days leading up to the shooting, noting that he had been wearing a bulletproof vest around his house and becoming increasingly agitated.
The Kingsessing mass shooting was one of several incidents of gun violence in the United States around the July Fourth holiday in 2023, highlighting ongoing concerns about public safety and gun control. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney expressed outrage and heartbreak over the incident, calling for a reexamination of how firearms are accessed by individuals.
As of December 2024, Carriker remains in custody awaiting trial. The tragic loss of life, including that of Dymir Stanton, continues to resonate within the Philadelphia community, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to address gun violence.
