Thomas McIlvane and the Royal Oak Post Office Mass Shooting – November 14, 1991

Overview

On November 14, 1991, Thomas Paul McIlvane, a 31-year-old former U.S. Marine, ex-postal worker and kick-boxer from Oak Park, Michigan, returned to the Royal Oak Post Office and carried out a mass shooting. Armed with a sawed-off .22-caliber Ruger semi-automatic carbine, he fatally shot four postal employees, wounded several others, and then committed suicide. The shooting lasted approximately five to six minutes and came shortly after his appeal to be rehired had been denied. This incident prompted a U.S. Congressional investigation into management practices and workplace conditions at the facility .

Background

Thomas Paul McIlvane had been terminated by the U.S. Postal Service on July 31, 1990, following an incident of insubordination—in which he used profane language toward a supervisor . He appealed the firing and underwent arbitration in October 1991 but lost the appeal. He threatened to "make the 1986 Edmond post office shooting look like Disneyland" if not reinstated. McIlvane left threatening voicemails and had his gun permit revoked, but no additional security measures were taken by postal authorities .
