Overview

On October 13, 2022, 15-year-old Austin Thompson carried out a mass shooting in Raleigh’s Hedingham neighborhood. The rampage began in his family home and continued through nearby areas, leaving five people dead and two more injured. The incident concluded after a prolonged standoff with law enforcement in which Thompson sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Incident Details

Thompson first killed his older brother in their home on Sahalee Way. He then proceeded into the neighborhood dressed in camouflage and carrying multiple weapons—including a shotgun, a handgun, and a hunting knife—and shot several people, including an off-duty police officer. He eventually barricaded himself in a shed near the Neuse River Greenway, where he exchanged fire with police before being found with a head injury.
