Andrew John Engeldinger and the 2012 Accent Signage Systems Mass Shooting

Overview

On September 27, 2012, former employee Andrew John Engeldinger (age 36) carried out a workplace mass shooting at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after being terminated from his job. He killed six people and injured two others before dying by suicide, in what remains the deadliest workplace shooting in Minnesota’s history.

Timeline of the Attack (September 27, 2012)

According to investigative summaries, Engeldinger was called to a meeting with operations director John Souter. Before entering the offices, he retrieved a 9mm Glock 19 pistol. During the termination meeting, a struggle ensued between Engeldinger, Souter, and manager Rami Cooks; Souter was critically wounded and Cooks was fatally shot. Engeldinger then moved through nearby areas of the facility, killing company founder Reuven Rahamim, employee Jacob Beneke, employee Ronald Edberg, and UPS driver Keith Basinski. On the production floor he shot production manager Eric Rivers, who later died of his wounds. Engeldinger ultimately took his own life in the building’s lower level. First 911 calls were logged at approximately 4:35 p.m.
