Ronald Williams Sr. and the 2026 Winfield Family Mass Killing
Overview
Ronald H. Williams Sr., 53, was one of two adults authorities say were responsible for a premeditated plan that ended with the deaths of four young children and both adults inside a family residence in Winfield, Kansas, on August 11, 2026. The case was initially described by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as a murder-suicide in which Williams had killed five members of his family before fatally shooting himself. Three days later, however, investigators announced an important change in their findings: evidence indicated that Williams and 44-year-old Kelly L. George jointly shared culpability for a plan to kill their four children and then themselves.
The killings occurred at a residence in the 400 block of West 9th Avenue in Winfield, a community in Cowley County in south-central Kansas. Six members of the family were ultimately found dead from gunshot wounds. The four children ranged in age from three to nine. Because the investigation remained ongoing as of August 17, 2026, authorities had not publicly established which adult fired each of the shots that killed the children. The KBI nevertheless said evidence supported the conclusion that Williams and George were jointly responsible for the premeditated plan.
The August 11, 2026 Killings
The first public account of the crime began with a disturbing telephone call from Williams himself. At approximately 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, officers with the Winfield Police Department were dispatched to the West 9th Avenue residence after Williams called authorities. According to the KBI, Williams told dispatchers that he had killed his family and intended to kill himself. Police officers arrived at the residence shortly afterward. As officers approached, they heard a single gunshot from inside the home and established a perimeter around the property.
Law enforcement did not immediately enter the residence. At approximately 10:57 a.m., nearly two hours after the original call, officers went inside and discovered six people suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced all six dead at the scene. At 11:05 a.m., assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was formally requested, and KBI agents and its Crime Scene Response Team began processing the residence and examining the circumstances of the deaths.
In its August 11 statement, the KBI said investigators initially believed Williams had shot all five other family members before making the 911 call and that Williams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after police arrived. That initial assessment led to widespread descriptions of Williams as the sole perpetrator of a five-victim murder-suicide. The investigation subsequently produced evidence that altered that account.
