Maksim Gelman’s 2011 New York City Killing Spree

Overview (February 11–12, 2011)

Over approximately 28 hours on February 11–12, 2011, 23-year-old Maksim Gelman committed a series of murders, assaults, and carjackings across Brooklyn and Manhattan. By the time he was subdued on a northbound 3 train near Penn Station on the morning of February 12, four people had been killed and five others wounded. He later pleaded guilty and received a 200-year sentence, with an additional 25 years for the subway slashing of Joseph Lozito.

Early morning, Friday, February 11, 2011 — Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn: Following a domestic argument, Gelman fatally stabbed his stepfather inside the family’s Sheepshead Bay apartment, then fled in the stepfather’s gray 2004 Lexus ES330. As he sped away, he struck a crossing guard, injuring her. Midday to late afternoon, February 11 — Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn: Gelman went to the home of acquaintance Yelena Bulchenko. He murdered her mother, Anna Bulchenko, around late morning. Hours later, when Yelena returned and called 9-1-1, Gelman came back and fatally stabbed her outside the residence before fleeing again. Late afternoon, February 11 — Brooklyn streets: After ramming another car, Gelman stabbed that driver, Arthur DiCrescento, and took his vehicle. He later struck pedestrian Stephen Tanenbaum, who died from his injuries. Shortly before 1 a.m., Saturday, February 12 — Brooklyn: Gelman abandoned the car, stabbed livery driver Fitz Fullerton after hailing a cab, then stabbed another motorist, Sheldon Pottinger, in the hand and stole his car. ~8:45 a.m., Saturday, February 12 — Manhattan (34th St–Penn Station, 3 train): Gelman boarded a northbound 3 train and slashed rider Joseph Lozito in the head and face. Lozito fought back and helped subdue Gelman, after which police officers arrested him on the train.
