Jason Dalton and the 2016 Kalamazoo Shooting Spree
Background
Jason Brian Dalton was a 45-year-old insurance adjuster and part-time Uber driver living near Kalamazoo, Michigan, when he carried out a series of apparently random shootings on February 20, 2016. Over approximately five hours, Dalton attacked people at three separate locations across Kalamazoo County, killing six people and seriously wounding two others.
The victims had no known connection to Dalton or to one another beyond the relationships within their individual groups. Investigators found no evidence that he had selected them because of a personal dispute or identifiable grievance. The unexplained nature of the attacks, combined with Dalton’s continued acceptance of ride requests between shootings, made the case especially disturbing to investigators and residents.
Erratic Driving Before the Shootings
Earlier on February 20, Uber passenger Matt Mellen requested a ride from Dalton. During the trip, Dalton allegedly began driving recklessly after receiving a telephone call. Mellen later described Dalton speeding, swerving into opposing traffic, crossing a median, ignoring traffic signs and sideswiping another vehicle.
Mellen repeatedly asked Dalton to stop and eventually escaped from the vehicle. He contacted police and warned others about the driver’s behavior. Hours later, authorities would connect Dalton to the deadly attacks unfolding throughout Kalamazoo County.
The Shooting of Tiana Carruthers
The first known shooting occurred at approximately 5:42 p.m. on February 20, 2016, at the Meadows Townhomes on Meadows Boulevard in Richland Township. Tiana Carruthers was outside near several children when Dalton drove into the residential complex.
Dalton reportedly asked Carruthers whether she was another person. After she told him that she was not, he turned his vehicle around, raised a handgun and opened fire. Carruthers was struck multiple times in her arms, legs and lower body. She fell near a parked vehicle and pretended to be dead while Dalton continued shooting.
Despite her severe wounds, Carruthers survived. She was credited with helping protect the children who were nearby when the gunfire began. Investigators recovered numerous cartridge casings from the scene and found bullet damage to a nearby residence.
Activities Between the Attacks
After shooting Carruthers, Dalton left the apartment complex and changed vehicles. He eventually began driving a black Chevrolet HHR. Investigators determined that he continued using the Uber application and transported passengers during the hours separating the shootings.
Several passengers later said Dalton appeared calm and did not behave in a way that made them believe they were riding with an armed killer. The contrast between the apparently normal rides and the violence committed between them became one of the most unsettling aspects of the case.
The Seelye Kia Dealership Murders
At approximately 10:00 p.m., Dalton arrived at the Seelye Kia dealership at 4102 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo. Richard Smith and his 17-year-old son, Tyler Smith, were in the dealership parking lot looking at vehicles.
Dalton approached the father and son and reportedly asked what they were looking at. Before they could meaningfully respond, he opened fire. Witnesses reported hearing a rapid series of gunshots. Richard and Tyler Smith were both fatally wounded at the scene.
Security recordings and witness descriptions helped investigators identify the black Chevrolet HHR and establish that the dealership murders were connected to the earlier attack at the Meadows Townhomes.
The Cracker Barrel Parking Lot Massacre
Only minutes after the dealership murders, Dalton drove to the Cracker Barrel restaurant at 5581 Cracker Barrel Boulevard in Texas Township. A group of women and a teenage girl were gathered near two vehicles in the parking lot.
Dalton drove near the group and began shooting without warning. Mary Jo Nye, Mary Lou Nye, Dorothy Brown and Barbara Hawthorne were killed. Fourteen-year-old Abigail Kopf was shot in the head and initially believed to be dead. She was later found to be alive and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
Abigail underwent extensive emergency treatment and rehabilitation. Although she suffered life-threatening injuries, she survived. The women who were killed had been spending the evening together and were preparing to leave when Dalton attacked them.
Victims Killed
- Tyler D. Smith, 17 — Killed on February 20, 2016, in the parking lot of the Seelye Kia dealership at 4102 Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was looking at vehicles with his father.
- Richard E. Smith, 53 — Killed on February 20, 2016, at the Seelye Kia dealership in Kalamazoo. He was Tyler Smith’s father and died beside his son.
- Mary Jo Nye, 60 — Killed on February 20, 2016, in the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel restaurant at 5581 Cracker Barrel Boulevard in Texas Township, Michigan.
- Mary Lou Nye, 62 — Killed on February 20, 2016, in the Cracker Barrel parking lot. She and Mary Jo Nye were sisters-in-law.
- Barbara Hawthorne, 68 — Killed on February 20, 2016, outside the Cracker Barrel restaurant. Abigail Kopf, who was seriously wounded, regarded Hawthorne as a grandmother figure.
- Dorothy Brown, 74 — Killed on February 20, 2016, in the Cracker Barrel parking lot while accompanying the other women.
Surviving Victims
- Tiana Carruthers — Shot multiple times at approximately 5:42 p.m. on February 20, 2016, at the Meadows Townhomes in Richland Township. She survived after undergoing treatment for serious injuries.
- Abigail Kopf, 14 — Shot in the head at approximately 10:24 p.m. on February 20, 2016, in the Cracker Barrel parking lot in Texas Township. She was initially reported dead but survived after emergency surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
The Manhunt and Arrest
After the dealership and Cracker Barrel shootings, police recognized that a mobile gunman was attacking people at separate locations. Witness accounts and dealership security footage allowed officers to issue a description of Dalton and the black Chevrolet HHR.
Authorities stopped several similar vehicles while searching Kalamazoo County. Dalton nevertheless continued accepting passengers. Some riders later recalled discussing the shootings during their trips without realizing that Dalton was the person being sought.
At approximately 12:40 a.m. on February 21, 2016, officers stopped Dalton after observing his vehicle near downtown Kalamazoo. He was taken into custody without a prolonged struggle. Police recovered a handgun and found additional evidence connecting him to the shooting scenes. He was also reportedly wearing body armor beneath his clothing.
Statements to Investigators
Following his arrest, Dalton admitted that he had committed the shootings. However, he gave investigators a bizarre explanation involving the Uber application on his telephone. He claimed the application displayed a devil-like image and exercised control over his actions.
Investigators found no evidence that the application had caused or directed the violence. Dalton had no documented criminal history and was not known to authorities as a person preparing to commit a mass attack. No conventional motive was ever firmly established.
Charges and Court Proceedings
On February 22, 2016, Dalton was arraigned on 16 felony charges. They included six counts of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and eight counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Dalton underwent psychiatric examinations and was found competent to stand trial. His attorneys initially intended to present an insanity defense. During a preliminary hearing on May 20, 2016, Dalton interrupted Tiana Carruthers while she testified and made disruptive statements. He was removed from the courtroom and later participated through a video connection.
The case remained delayed for several years as attorneys addressed psychiatric reports, competency issues and pretrial appeals. Jury selection was eventually scheduled for January 2019.
Guilty Pleas and Sentence
On January 7, 2019, shortly before opening statements were expected to begin, Dalton unexpectedly pleaded guilty to every charge. He acknowledged in court that he had shot the eight victims and understood that his pleas would result in mandatory life sentences.
On February 5, 2019, Dalton was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for each of the six murders. He also received additional sentences for the attempted murders of Carruthers and Kopf and for the firearm offenses.
Relatives of the victims and survivors addressed the court during sentencing, describing the permanent emotional and physical damage caused by Dalton’s actions. The court emphasized that the victims had been selected at random and were given no opportunity to escape or defend themselves.
Aftermath
The Kalamazoo shootings devastated families throughout southwestern Michigan and prompted renewed scrutiny of background checks and safety procedures used by ride-sharing companies. Uber permanently removed Dalton from its platform and cooperated with investigators attempting to reconstruct his movements.
Memorial services and public vigils were held for the six people killed. Tiana Carruthers and Abigail Kopf faced lengthy recoveries from their wounds, while the families of Richard and Tyler Smith, Mary Jo Nye, Mary Lou Nye, Barbara Hawthorne and Dorothy Brown continued to mourn lives taken during an inexplicable night of violence.
Jason Dalton’s guilty pleas prevented a lengthy murder trial but did not provide a clear explanation for why he committed the attacks. The February 20, 2016, shooting spree remains one of the deadliest crimes in Kalamazoo County history.
