On a cold February evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the life of Mary Lou Nye, a 62-year-old woman, was tragically cut short in a series of random acts of violence that stunned the community. On February 20, 2016, Nye was one of six people killed in a shooting rampage that spread across the county.
Mary Lou Nye, a resident of Baroda, Michigan, had spent the evening with her sister-in-law, Mary Jo Nye, and two other friends. Their outing concluded at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
As they sat in their vehicle in the parking lot, a man opened fire, killing all four women. Earlier that evening, the same gunman had shot and killed a father and son at a car dealership and seriously wounded another woman in an apartment complex parking lot.
The perpetrator was identified as 45-year-old Jason Brian Dalton, an Uber driver who had reportedly been taking fares in between the shootings. Dalton was arrested in the early morning hours of February 21 without incident after a massive manhunt. A semi-automatic handgun was found in his vehicle. Authorities determined that the victims were chosen at random.
Following his arrest, Dalton confessed to the shootings. He was charged with six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, and eight felony firearm charges. After being found competent to stand trial, his legal team initially planned an insanity defense. However, in a surprising turn on January 7, 2019, Jason Dalton pleaded guilty to all charges against him. On February 5, 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
