On a tragic spring day in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a mother's life was cut short, leaving a void in the lives of her seven children and many loved ones. Tonya Marie Woody, a 43-year-old female, was fatally shot on May 20, 2022. Described as a fun-loving and caring woman with a big beautiful smile, Tonya was known to light up any room she entered. She grew up in Covert, Michigan, and cherished visits to her brother, enjoying the simple pleasures of grilling and the country night air surrounded by
family.
The circumstances of Tonya's death were both violent and alarming. Following the shooting, an Amber Alert was issued for her one-year-old son, Armanii. The child's father, 32-year-old Eric Smith of Kalamazoo, was identified as the suspect in Tonya's death and the alleged kidnapper of their son. A sense of urgency and fear gripped the community as law enforcement searched for the missing infant.
A breakthrough in the case came when Eric Smith turned himself into the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
