In the summer of 1972, Linda Clark, a 19-year-old female, and her friend, Claudia Bidstrup, also 19, were traveling from their homes in Chicago when they made a fateful stop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. On July 5th, the two young women pulled into a gas station where a 28-year-old attendant named Danny Ranes was working. What began as a routine stop for gasoline quickly descended into a nightmare. Ranes, along with his 15-year-old accomplice, Brent Koster, disabled the women's car, telling them it wouldn't start, and directed them to the back of the station. Once isolated, Ranes and Koster threatened the women with knives, then subjected them to a brutal sexual assault. A few hours later, both Linda Clark and Claudia Bidstrup were murdered.
Following the murders, Ranes and Koster wrapped the bodies of their victims in a blanket and placed them in the back of the women's car. Koster then drove the vehicle to a wooded area near Galesburg, a small city not far from Kalamazoo, and set it on fire in an attempt to destroy any evidence. For fourteen days, the fate of the two Chicago women remained a mystery. Their remains were eventually discovered by a passing motorcyclist. The investigation into their deaths would soon uncover a string of other violent crimes and bring to light the dark actions of a serial killer and his young associate. The discovery of the bodies set in motion a complex investigation that would ultimately connect their case to other unsolved murders in the Kalamazoo area.
The breakthrough in the case came in September of that year when Brent Koster, plagued by guilt, began to talk about the murders to several street workers. One of these individuals was a police informant, and Koster was arrested on September 5, 1972. During his interrogation, he readily confessed to his involvement in the killings and implicated Danny Ranes. Koster's confession also linked Ranes to the unsolved murders of 29-year-old Patricia Howk in March 1972 and 18-year-old Pamela Fearnow in August 1972. Based on Koster's testimony, Danny Ranes was arrested that same evening. In exchange for his cooperation and testimony against Ranes, Koster was charged with second-degree murder in Linda Clark's death, to which he pleaded guilty. Danny Ranes was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Pamela Fearnow and second-degree murder for the death of Patricia Howk. He later pleaded no contest to the second-degree murders of Linda Clark and Claudia Bidstrup, receiving two additional life sentences. Ranes was sentenced to a total of four life sentences without the possibility of parole and died in prison in January 2022. The case of Linda Clark's murder was part of a larger, terrifying series of events that shocked the Kalamazoo community, ultimately brought to a close by the confession of a troubled teenager and the subsequent conviction of a serial killer.
