In the quiet city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, a 74-year-old woman named Dorothy Judy Brown was one of the victims of a tragic and random act of violence on the evening of February 20, 2016. Known to her friends and neighbors in Battle Creek as Judy, she was a kind-hearted and generous person, remembered for sharing fresh herbs from her garden and for her warm, friendly demeanor.
On that fateful Saturday, Brown was in a car in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant with friends,
intending to have dinner. It was there that she and others were senselessly gunned down in a shooting spree that shook the community to its core. The violent act claimed the lives of six people in total and left two others critically injured. Brown was a mother to two adult sons and was described by those who knew her as a 'sweet, sweet old lady.'
The perpetrator of this horrific crime was identified as Jason Dalton, who was 45 years old at the time. He was arrested in connection with the shootings and subsequently faced a total of 16 charges. These included six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, and eight counts of felony firearm possession. The attacks appeared to be random, with Dalton targeting multiple locations throughout the Kalamazoo area.
