In the summer of 2017, a brave act to de-escalate a heated argument tragically cut short the life of Graciela Portillo-Esparza, a 31-year-old mother of four, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. On July 20th, at a mobile home park, Graciela stepped in to intervene in a dispute between her brother, Oscar Portillo, and a man named Zachary Patten. In a sudden and violent turn of events, Patten produced a firearm and fatally shot Graciela.
Her family remembered her as a strong-willed and protective individual who always stood up for her loved ones.
The tragedy of Graciela's death was compounded by the fact that it was part of a violent spree by Patten. Following the shooting in Kalamazoo, he drove approximately 30 miles to St. Joseph County where he murdered another individual, Shane Richardson, who was the new husband of Patten's ex-wife. This string of violence initiated a multi-county investigation that culminated in Patten's arrest.
Zachary Patten was subsequently charged with a multitude of crimes, including the first-degree murder of Graciela Portillo-Esparza. During the court proceedings, Patten admitted to shooting in Graciela's direction but made the claim that his intended target was her brother. Despite this claim, a Kalamazoo County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in February 2018. As a result of his conviction, Zachary Patten was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in March 2018, ensuring he would be held accountable for the devastating loss he inflicted upon Graciela's family and the community.
