Chana Kay Redden, a 36-year-old female, had recently moved into a duplex on North Church Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and was looking forward to a new chapter in her life. She had overcome a period of homelessness and was excited about her new home. However, her plans for the future were tragically cut short in early July 2023.
In the days following the Fourth of July, Chana's mother, with whom she spoke daily, grew increasingly concerned when she couldn't reach her.
A welfare check was requested, but initially, nothing appeared out of the ordinary from the outside of the residence. A few days later, on July 7, 2023, a neighbor reported a foul odor coming from the duplex. This time, when authorities gained access to the second-floor apartment, they made a grim discovery. Chana's body was found in an advanced state of decomposition.
An autopsy later confirmed the tragic truth: Chana Kay Redden had been shot in the head. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety immediately launched a homicide investigation into her death. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood, searching for any information that could lead them to a suspect. They discovered bullet casings in the siding of the house, suggesting that shots may have been fired from outside the home.
Despite their efforts, the investigation has been challenging. As of nearly a year after her death, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has stated that they are determined to not let the case go cold and continue to seek new leads to bring justice for Chana and her family. Her mother is left with the pain of her daughter's unsolved murder, holding on to the memory of her child.
