On a cold February evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a night at the theater for a group of friends ended in an unimaginable tragedy. Mary Jo Nye, a 60-year-old retired English teacher from Battle Creek, was among those who tragically lost their lives on February 20, 2016, in a series of random shootings that gripped the community with fear. She had spent her last day enjoying an outing with her sister-in-law, Mary Lou Nye, and two friends, Dorothy Brown and Barbara Hawthorne, a joyful habit of theirs.
The four women were sitting in their car in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant when they were senselessly gunned down. This was the final and deadliest stop in a violent rampage carried out by an Uber driver named Jason Dalton. Earlier in the evening, Dalton had shot and seriously wounded a woman at an apartment complex and then killed a father and son at a car dealership. In the Cracker Barrel parking lot, he opened fire on the car carrying Mary Jo Nye and her friends, killing all four women. A 14-year-old girl in another vehicle was also critically injured.
Mary Jo Nye was remembered as a vibrant and caring woman who had dedicated her life to education. She was a founding teacher at Calhoun Community High School, an alternative high school in Battle Creek, where she was a beloved mentor to countless at-risk students, helping them to achieve their high school diplomas. Even in retirement, she continued to tutor students, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to their success. Her death was a profound loss to her family, friends, and the many lives she had touched through her work and her generous spirit.
The perpetrator, Jason Brian Dalton, was arrested in the early morning hours following the shooting spree without incident. Police identified him after a manhunt based on descriptions of his vehicle. Dalton was charged with six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, and eight felony firearm charges. After being found competent to stand trial, Dalton surprised many by pleading guilty to all charges in January 2019. The following month, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His motive for the seemingly random and devastating attacks remains unclear.
