Marta Melero-Gomez, a 52-year-old Caucasian woman, tragically lost her life in December 2021 following a violent encounter in her Kalamazoo, Michigan, home. The incident, which unfolded at the Cloisters Condominiums complex, was reported by neighbors who heard a domestic dispute and the sound of gunshots. When officers from the Kalamazoo Township Police Department arrived at the scene, they were met with a grim discovery that would ultimately be classified as a murder-suicide.
Inside the
residence, law enforcement found Melero-Gomez critically injured from a gunshot wound. They also found 54-year-old Eric Minines, who was deceased from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators later confirmed that Minines and Melero-Gomez were in a relationship. In a fortunate turn of events amidst the tragedy, police were able to safely rescue two children from the home, who were physically unharmed and subsequently placed with family members. Melero-Gomez was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Marta Melero-Gomez succumbed to her injuries a week after the shooting, on December 9, 2021. The investigation into the incident concluded that Minines was the sole perpetrator, shooting Melero-Gomez before taking his own life. According to the Kalamazoo Township Police Chief, there was no history of prior incidents or criminal activity involving the couple, which made the violent event particularly shocking to the community. As the suspect died at the scene, no arrests were made, and the case was closed. This tragic event marked the fourth homicide in Kalamazoo Township for the year 2021, all of which were the result of gun violence.
