In the quiet city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, the life of 35-year-old Nikkole Shurree Riojas was tragically cut short on Friday, March 8, 2019. Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to a call about a possible homicide at a home on Charles Avenue. Inside, they made a devastating discovery in a bedroom: Nikkole was deceased, having suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Adding to the sorrow of the scene, four children, ranging in age from 2 to 8 years old, were also found inside the house, unharmed and subsequently placed with family.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a person of interest, Nikkole's ex-boyfriend, Anthony Ozomaro. The pursuit of Ozomaro escalated into a dramatic police chase through the city, compelling Kalamazoo College and Woodward Elementary School to go into lockdown. The chase culminated in a standoff at a house on West North Street, after which the 32-year-old suspect was taken into custody. Initially, he was held on charges of fleeing and eluding, as well as a bond violation.
As the legal process unfolded, Anthony Ozomaro was charged with the murder of Nikkole Riojas. During a search of his home, investigators discovered a significant quantity of crystal methamphetamine, a digital scale, and ammunition. This led to a separate federal case in which he was convicted of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and sentenced to a minimum of ten years in prison. Ozomaro chose to represent himself during this trial.
In May 2024, justice for Nikkole Riojas was delivered. After being convicted of her murder, Anthony Ozomaro, then 37, was sentenced to a term of 100 to 150 years in prison. During the sentencing, the court heard powerful victim impact statements from Nikkole's parents, who spoke of their profound loss and the devastating impact her murder had on their family, especially her five children who were left without a mother. Nikkole was remembered as a beloved mother, daughter, and friend who was taken too soon, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew and loved her.
