On the night of October 14, 2012, 36-year-old Olman Cruz was found deceased at the bottom of a stairwell in an east Charlotte apartment complex. Responding to a 911 call reporting a person who had fallen down the stairs, police arrived to discover Cruz had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. A neighbor, Quenton Dawson, recounted hearing two loud noises and, upon investigating, found Cruz at the base of the stairs.
