On May 12, 2008, 63-year-old Larry Allen Broughton was tragically shot and killed during an attempted robbery while working at the front desk of the Country Hearth Inn in Charlotte, North Carolina. Two men entered the inn under the pretense of booking a room. Shortly after, one of the men brandished a gun and opened fire, fatally shooting Broughton in the chest. Another employee, Manjula Patel, was also shot and left in serious condition but survived.
