In the summer of 2019, the community of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was shaken by the tragic death of Shequita Lewis, a 33-year-old mother of nine. On July 15, 2019, Lewis was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in her home on North Church Street. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Known affectionately as 'Quanna,' Lewis was a devoted mother and a dedicated community advocate who had even run for the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners in the fall of
2018, narrowly losing the election.
The investigation into her death quickly led to the arrest of 36-year-old Darien Gilleylen, the father of two of Lewis's children. Gilleylen was arraigned on charges of open murder and felony weapons. The circumstances surrounding the shooting were revealed to be a domestic dispute that escalated to a fatal conclusion. The couple's teenage children were present during the incident and later testified that their mother had threatened their father with a knife before he retrieved a gun and shot her.
In October 2021, a jury convicted Darien Gilleylen of the lesser charge of manslaughter and felony possession of a firearm. In February 2022, he was sentenced to a total of 72 months to 15 years in prison. With credit for time served in the county jail, he could be eligible for release in as little as five and a half years. During the sentencing, one of Lewis's sisters expressed that the sentence was a 'hard pill to swallow,' while Gilleylen offered an apology, stating he was sorry for what happened and that he missed Lewis, whom he considered his friend. The judge described the shooting as an isolated and tragic incident.
