On February 20, 2016, Smith and his 17-year-old son, Tyler, were at a car dealership when they were fatally shot. The two were reportedly looking at vehicles when the gunman approached and opened fire.
The man responsible for the deaths of Richard and his son was Jason Dalton, a 45-year-old Uber driver who embarked on a shooting spree across Kalamazoo
County that same night. Dalton's rampage claimed the lives of six people in total and severely injured two others at three different locations. He drove between picking up unsuspecting passengers for the ride-sharing service.
Following the shootings, law enforcement launched a manhunt for the perpetrator. Dalton was arrested in the early morning hours of the following day. During interviews with police, Dalton claimed that a 'devil figure' on the Uber app had been controlling him during the attacks. He was subsequently charged with six counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and felony firearm charges.
Initially, Dalton's legal team planned to pursue an insanity defense. However, he was found competent to stand trial. In a surprising turn of events just as his trial was about to begin in January 2019, Jason Dalton pleaded guilty to all charges against him. This plea was made against the advice of his own attorney.
On February 5, 2019, Jason Dalton was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, family members of the victims, including the grieving wife and mother Laurie Smith, delivered powerful impact statements, expressing their profound loss and pain.
