In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 24, 2023, Kenneth Lee Woodard Jr., a 33-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. while Woodard, who had recently moved to Ohio and was in his hometown for a weekend visit, was driving near the intersection of North Burdick Street and Paterson Street. Despite being struck by multiple bullets, Woodard managed to drive a short distance with a passenger to West Prouty Street before stopping.
First responders arrived and rendered aid, transporting him to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries approximately 20 minutes later. A second victim, a 29-year-old man from Kalamazoo, also suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety launched an investigation into what was the city's tenth homicide of the year. Detectives recovered multiple shell casings from the scene, and the evidence suggested the presence of more than one shooter. Investigators believe that Woodard was the intended target of the attack. Although authorities have received numerous anonymous tips through Silent Observer identifying the alleged perpetrators, the case has stalled. The primary obstacle for law enforcement is the lack of a witness willing to provide a formal statement and testify in court. The Kalamazoo County Prosecutor has stated that without admissible evidence, such as eyewitness testimony, DNA, a confession, or cellphone records, his office cannot press charges.
Known to his loved ones as 'King Kenny,' Woodard was remembered as a protective and caring father devoted to his two young children. His family acknowledged he may have had a troubled past but believed he was actively trying to improve his life, especially following the recent death of his mother, next to whom he is now buried. As of the most recent reports, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly named in the shooting. The investigation remains open as detectives continue to appeal to the public for anyone with direct knowledge of the events to come forward to help bring justice for Kenneth Lee Woodard Jr. and his family.
