In the spring of 2011, the city of Kalamazoo was struck by a tragedy that would leave a lasting scar on the community and its law enforcement family. On the evening of Monday, April 18, 2011, Officer Eric Emiliano Zapata, a dedicated and respected member of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, responded to a call of shots fired in the 1400 block of Hays Park Avenue.
