Public Safety Officer Eric Emiliano Zapata, aged 35, tragically lost his life on April 18, 2011, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Officer Zapata was responding to a report of shots fired in the 1400 block of Hays Park Avenue when he encountered a suspect. Another officer had approached a man standing on a porch and, during their interaction, the man suddenly pulled out a gun and exchanged shots with the officer.
