In the summer of 2021, the life of 25-year-old Michael Jaye Underwood III, a White male from Kalamazoo, Michigan, was abruptly cut short. On the evening of July 24th, what began as a dispute over a child escalated into a fatal act of violence in the parking lot of a Kalamazoo Township apartment complex. Underwood, a tree trimmer for Asplundh known for his vibrant personality and ability to bring joy to those around him, was shot as he was getting out of his car.
The man responsible was identified as 27-year-old Darrell Wayne Felton Jr. The two men were acquainted with each other through a third party.
Following the shooting, authorities quickly responded to the scene and found Underwood suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. The investigation that followed indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Felton was promptly arrested and taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail. He was subsequently charged with open murder, a felony that could carry a life sentence, and a felony firearm charge. The community mourned the loss of Underwood, who was remembered as a cherished son, brother, stepdad, and boyfriend.
