In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a family and community in mourning. Tykarri Shaheed Lucas, a 23-year-old male who had recently moved to the city from Benton Harbor, was fatally shot on September 15, 2018. The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. inside J&B Discount Liquor on Stockbridge Avenue, a place that would become the scene of a senseless act of violence.
Lucas, a father and a beloved son and brother, was pronounced dead, marking another victim of gun violence.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led authorities to a suspect. Several hours after the incident, law enforcement officers located and arrested 27-year-old Jerome Oday II at a friend's residence in Wyoming, a city south of Grand Rapids. Oday was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of Tykarri Lucas. As the legal proceedings began, Oday was held in the Kalamazoo County Jail and was denied bond during his video arraignment. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately made public by the police.
The judicial process culminated in Jerome Oday II pleading guilty to second-degree murder. On January 14, 2019, at the Kalamazoo County Courthouse, Oday faced the family of the man he killed. Before being sentenced, he offered an apology to Tykarri Lucas's loved ones. The judge then handed down a sentence of 28 to 75 years in prison for the murder. The conviction brought a measure of closure to the case, but for the family of Tykarri Shaheed Lucas, the loss of a young man with his life ahead of him remains a permanent sorrow.
