On an autumn night in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the life of 18-year-old Jason Whetstone was tragically cut short. On October 2, 2021, Jason was at a party on East Maple Street with his girlfriend when an altercation ensued. A 24-year-old Western Michigan University student named Maliek Hargrave began acting aggressively toward's Jason's girlfriend and questioned Jason about a possible rival gang affiliation. This confrontation escalated, leading Hargrave to fatally shoot Jason.
Jason was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Maliek Hargrave was arrested without incident and subsequently charged with open murder and a felony weapons charge. Hargrave, who had ironically been recognized for his efforts to steer youth away from violence, chose to remain silent until he had legal representation. The case against him proceeded to trial, which initially ended in a mistrial. However, justice for Jason Whetstone was pursued, and in January 2024, a jury found Maliek Hargrave guilty of second-degree murder. For his crime, Hargrave was sentenced to a maximum of 75 years in prison.
Jason was remembered by his family and friends as a kind-hearted and dedicated young man. His mother, Lakisha Whetstone, spoke of the profound loss and her desire for justice. On what would have been his 19th birthday, his loved ones gathered for a balloon release to honor his memory. Jason, who had received his high school diploma at the age of 16, was employed at Pfizer at the time of his death.
