In the summer of 2021, the community of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was shaken by the tragic death of Carl Lamar Atkins III, a 9-year-old African American boy. On the evening of June 24, 2021, he was fatally wounded in a shooting that occurred in the city's Edison neighborhood. First responders and law enforcement arrived at the scene to find the young boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries.
