In a tragic turn of events on January 6, 2016, 17-year-old Temetrion Hegler was shot and killed in his Kalamazoo, Michigan, residence. A senior at Loy Norrix High School, Hegler was a vibrant young man with a promising future, hoping to attend Michigan State University to become an athletic trainer. He was known for his kind heart, sense of humor, and friendly demeanor, often greeting classmates in the halls. His grandmother described him as an innocent kid with a pure heart and soul.
Temetrion, a male, was born on June 15, 1998, and was residing with his grandmother and her husband at the time of his death.
The perpetrator of this senseless act was his step-grandfather, Bruce Embry. On that fateful afternoon, police responded to a domestic disturbance call and discovered Hegler on the floor with a gunshot wound to his head; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Embry, who was present and unarmed when officers arrived, immediately confessed to the shooting, stating, 'I shot him... Take me to jail.' A 25-caliber handgun was later found in a bedroom in the house. The motive for the shooting reportedly stemmed from Hegler overhearing his grandfather on the phone with another woman and informing his grandmother about it.
Bruce Embry, who had a prior criminal record including a larceny conviction and was a registered sex offender, was charged with open murder, committing a felony in possession of a firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During his arraignment, he claimed the shooting was accidental. Despite this claim, a jury convicted the 52-year-old of first-degree murder in July 2016. The conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The sentencing hearing in August 2016 was marked by high emotions as Hegler's uncle, Willie Warren, lunged at Embry in the courtroom while giving a victim impact statement. Deputies quickly restrained Warren, and a shouting match erupted between the families of the victim and the defendant. Hegler's grandmother, Iquilla Hegler, expressed the family's profound devastation, explaining that her son's actions stemmed from the deep pain of losing someone who was like a brother to him.
