On a late summer evening in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the life of 24-year-old Marcell Savon Alguarelles-Bell was tragically cut short. On August 26, 2023, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the sound of gunfire in the 1600 block of East Stockbridge Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered Alguarelles-Bell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. In a crucial turn of events, before he passed away, Alguarelles-Bell was able to identify the man who shot him.
The individual named by Alguarelles-Bell was Axel Armando Zuniga-Rivera, a 22-year-old from Kalamazoo. Following the fatal shooting, Zuniga-Rivera fled the state of Michigan in an attempt to evade capture. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies traced him to Indianapolis. On September 7, 2023, with the assistance of U.S. Marshals, Zuniga-Rivera was apprehended by the Indianapolis police. He was subsequently extradited back to Michigan to face charges for the death of Alguarelles-Bell.
The legal proceedings against Axel Armando Zuniga-Rivera culminated in a jury trial. On Friday, December 13, 2024, the jury delivered its verdict, finding him guilty of first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. On January 10, 2025, Axel Zuniga-Rivera was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder.
